What is Silk fabric? Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The silk worm, also known as the silk moth, produces silk fibers in order to form cocoons for its pupal stage. The cocoons are made of a protein fiber called fibroin. The silkworm that is most commonly used in the production of silk is the Bombyx mori, which is a domesticated silkworm that feeds on the leaves of the mulberry tree. This silkworm is reared in captivity, a process known as sericulture, in order to obtain the silk fibers from their cocoons. The process of obtaining silk fibers from the cocoons involves carefully unwinding the cocoons and collecting the silk fibers. The silk fibers are then cleaned, carded, and spun into yarn, which can then be used to weave silk fabric. The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different colors. Silk fabric is known for its softness, drapability, and luster, and it is often used in clothing, upholstery, and other decorative items.
